New Harmony’s agrarian setting in the cornfields of Indiana and its modern architecture was an ideal setting to discuss urban and rural utopias past and present. Seeking to reconcile the dogmatic religious and secular attitudes of the two communities that first shaped New Harmony -- the Harmonists and the Owenites -- the Houston-born, New Harmony philanthropist Jane Blaffer Owen harnessed modern architecture, gardens and landscape, as well as directing preservation efforts to re-invent New Harmony as a site of spiritual encounters.
Since its founding in 1814 New Harmony has been at the heart of some provocative experiments in communal living, design, and education. A work-in-progress, unlike some ‘paper’ utopias, New Harmony was actually built and continues to function today as a ‘real’ place. ACS 8 participants were encouraged to reflect on New Harmony’s living legacy and to identify parallel experiments, both past and present, to explore and discuss.
